It gives me immense pleasure to announce the publication of my urban fantasy novel, BLACK MAGIC WOMAN.

It’s in most bookstores, and available online from Amazon and other dealers.

Here are 13 things you didn’t know about BLACK MAGIC WOMAN -- both the plot and the book itself.

1. The hero (well, one of them), Quincey Morris, is the great-great-grandson of the
Texan who died at the end of the original DRACULA. Contending with
supernatural evil has become something of a Morris family tradition.

2. The book was released in the UK and Australia on January 8th. The North
American release date was pushed back to January 29th because of a problem at
the North American printer.

3. African “muti” magic sometimes involves the use of human organs – which must be “harvested” while the victim is still alive.

4. "White" witch Libby Chastain, Quincey's partner in the investigation, is
bisexual, and a devout practitioner of what she calls "serial monogamy."

5. Jim Butcher, author of the "Dresden Files" novels, was kind enough to read
the manuscript pre-publication. As quoted on the book's cover, he calls BLACK
MAGIC WOMAN "the best manuscript I've ever been asked to read."

6. Quincey Morris is terrified of snakes, having almost died from
snakebite as a young boy. If only he knew….

7. Simon R. Green, author of the John Taylor 'Nightside" novels, was sent an
advance reading copy of BLACK MAGIC WOMAN and said, "This is a novel that's packed with story and engaging characters, and I can't wait to read the next one."

8. "White" magic cannot be used to do harm to somebody -- which doesn't mean
that you can't use it sometimes to kick somebody’s ass, as Libby Chastain knows full well.

9. Waterstones, the largest UK bookstore chain, has designated BLACK MAGIC
WOMAN as its featured SF/Fantasy title of the month. It's got its own display
in each of their 300-some stores. And if that ain’t freakin’ awesome, I don’t know what is.

10. It’s possible to drive off a bunch of zombies without having to “kill” them. All you need is the right magic – and a skilled magician to use it.

11. The South African national police really does have an Occult Crimes
Investigation Unit, although my character, Garth Van Dreenan, is not based on any
real person.

12. Vampires really do hate sunlight. A lot.

13. When you make a deal with the devil, the notes come due in brimstone.

Life is filled with people who think once halloween is over, you can't be scary anymore.

For those of us who are ALWAYS in touch with the really, really FUN bits, one of my most excellent buddies is hosting Seasons Bleedings on the 18th in Portland, Oregon:

I am especially happy to announce that two of our most recent short movies are going to be in this festival: the Portland-shot "Innsmouth Legacy" and a comedy we made last spring called "Con of the Dead", which is one of the funniest damn zombie movies to come down the rotten pustulant pike.

So, on December 18, you could possibly go to that uptight corporate "holiday party" and watch the same photocopy chick get drunk and mash her skanky boyfriend in the back while everyone else TRIES to not notice and compares each other's spouses, or you could come out to the Bossanova, have a helluva time, whoop it up with people who are there to laugh and scream, and leave shaking your head that so much outrageousness is still legal.

You know, 'cause I believe in choice. ;)

So tribe.net dealt itself a killing blow
yesterday. Following their stated
decision that there's some content
they just don't want on what was
their promising but underdeveloped
Friendster/Craigslist/message-
board fusion system, they've taken
an extraordinarily broad view of
2257, the American law about
depicting minors in actual sexual
acts that compels content producers
to hold extensive personal data on
performers and models. Using a
combination of company moderation
and community informants, any
image smelling of sex will be
suppressed or removed from public
site. Since Tribe's main users are
Burners (from Burning Man) and
omnisexual Bay Area polyfuckers,
with a small but active enclave of
sex workers in the middle somewhere,
Tribe would appear to be cutting
their own throats. Or polishing the
place up for sale.

Their policy statements are
amorphous enough to have a
chilling effect. Tribe users' front
pages allow you to display entries
from your favourite blogs, part of
their last smart move, to make
Tribe your homepage on the web.
But if I call in content from Sexerati
or AVN, I appear to be in
contravention of their phrase
"sexually active conduct". Even
though I didn't make the entries,
and don't live in the States, Tribe
consider me a producer, and subject
to their frankly quite barking take
on 2257. Also, you now can't get
a Tribe account unless you're over
18. Work that one out.

Flesh of my Flesh needs you!

It's a low-budget action horror movie that looks like a million bucks! Flesh of my Flesh (http://www.FleshOfMyFlesh.com/) chronicles the last hours of the War of the Undead, told from the point of view of the people stuck in the middle.

We're deep in post-production now and we're looking for a handful of very short special visual effects. Basically, there are some key seconds here and there where we could REALLY use a trick of lighting, a flash of inspiration, a dash of rotoscoping, the barest flicker of 3d or even the occasional wire erased. The pieces are rarely more than a second or two long, so the committment isn't that great per piece.

As payment, we can offer our profound gratitude, screen credit, and a copy of the DVD when it's finished.

What kind of schedule are we looking at? Well, the nice thing is that the assignments are all short and are designed to be distributed, so you can take your time and do the great job you've always wanted to do.

A little bit about us: Guerrilla Productions has been making movies since 1999. In 2003, we premiered our first feature, "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" (which was also anim) and shortly thereafter released it on DVD. It is now in its second printing. In 2004, we released our second DVD, "The Cosmic Horror Fun-Pak". "Flesh of my Flesh" will probably be our third DVD. So, it WILL be produced (in case you were wondering).

Ideally, you'll have some kind of experience with your tools of choice (we really don't care, as long as the files can ultimately be imported into Adobe Premiere, which means damn near any delivery format -- heck, you could send us a collection of sequential bitmaps if need be!), and be willing to ask questions and be eager to try new things. Each scene is a unique and cool piece of this movie.

The H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland!

Greetings!

This weekend (October 1, 2, 3) is the annual H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival, which is held in Portland. Once again, the Hollywood Theater is hosting the weekend long event, which celebrates the work of early American author H. P. Lovecraft. If you thought "Re-Animator" and "From Beyond" was the only thing going on from the world of Lovecraft, then boy are YOU in for a surprise!

The Festival brings in dozens of short movies from all over the world, features from all over (and from different time periods!), live musical guests, vendors, contests, and prizes.

Me, personally, I have a ten-minute short film in it called "Innsmouth Legacy" (one of our best), and from what I've seen of the other offered movies, you're in for a treat!

Yes, it is just a few months away and i am growing happier by the minute. My household is putting together a Hellraiser themed party. Any one have any ideas? My brainpan is mush because of work but i wanted your help so i didn't forget anything obvious. And speaking of obvious...anyone know a good bright red substance for the mattress? We're getting a clunker from Goodwill so clean up won't be an issue (but the garbage men will sure be scratching their heads the following trash day!). It'll also be for adults only so anything goes.

Edwardian costume?

I hope this is an appropriate post. But was wondering if anyone on the board could recommend a costumer or shop that might help me put together my costume this year. The concept is an Edwardian undead mortician. Think Ed Gory meets the Adams Family meets horror movie. Basically, the costume is a black suite with tails, while gloves, top hat, white-out contact lenses and some makeup - and maybe some rubber hoses, needles, and small jars of odd substance for props. But I have no idea where to start looking for an Edwardian-styled suit. I'm in San Francisco. Thanks!

The Convergence 10 Art Show is now accepting submissions from artists wishing to participate.

Submitted artwork will be juried. Submission does NOT guarantee inclusion. Artwork should be of general interest to the gothic/industrial/fetish community, and must display a reasonable degree of skill and ability. All traditional media are acceptable; unusual art forms, art that requires a power supply, art that is large/heavy, or art that may present a risk to C10 attendees will be considered and reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
